Those with formal training with the more complicated and modern appliances will see significant job growth.

Appliance Technician School

Although it's not required to get into the field, the best way to get to be an appliance tech is to attend appliance technician school. Typically found in a vocational school, appliance technician school can last one to two years. The core curriculum usually revolves around electricity, electronics and electronic components as most appliance parts will be found in the class. With the advanced design and intricate circuitry of newer appliances, a repairman without attending a appliance technician school would be behind the curve.

Appliance Technician on the Job

A great deal of a appliance repairman's job is on-site. Typically, washers, dryers, refrigerators, etc., are too big to easily transport to a central location. Solid customer service skills, on top of the technical knowledge, play an important part as you will be in the homes of customers with our without them present. When repairs are made, an appliance tech will usually perform regular maintenance duties, including tightening screws, lubricating gears, etc.

While appliance techs will see two percent job growth, or at about average as other occupations, by 2018, those with technical training will see significant growth, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage was $35,590 in 2008.
