For a hands-on career that requires technical electronics knowledge, consider electronic technician schools. You would learn about all types of equipment from power generators to power drills. After graduating from electronic technician schools, you'll have options in several different fields and industries.

Although it's not required, most employers prefer applicants from electronic technician schools. Most electronic technician schools are two year programs and a part of either community colleges or technical schools. If working in the field, good communication skills and a neat appearance will be valuable as well.

Electronic Tech Careers

Electronic tech careers cover a wide spectrum of occupations. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2008, out of 160,900 electronic techs, 78,000 worked in repairs and installation of commercial and industrial equipment. Their May 2009 salary was $50,730 with only four percent projected growth between 2008 and 2018, according to the BLS. For most sub-fields, the predicted growth is little to none. However, electronic techs in powerhouse, substation, and relay work, growth is expected at 12 percent, slightly above average. It is also the best paying field, as they earned a median salary of $62,270.

According to the BLS, electronic techs could also be:
  • Electric motor, power tool, and related repairers
  • Electrical and electronics installers and repairers, transportation equipment
  • Electrical and electronics repairers, powerhouse, substation, and relay
  • Electronic equipment installers and repairers, motor vehicles
