Neurodiagnostic Technician Schools

Neurodiagnostic Technician Schools Set You on Path to Career of Helping People

An exciting and growing technical medical career is that of the neurodiagnostic technician. However, you can't get there by just winging it. You need to attend one of many neurodiagnostic technician schools.

Neurodiagnostic technician schools are typically two-year programs housed by community colleges, but some are in vocation schools or hospitals. You would learn the basics of:
  • Electroencephalogram (EEG) use
  • Nerve conduction studies
  • Intraoperative neuromonitoring
  • Polysomnography
Neurodiagnostic techs are highly encouraged to pursue certification within two years of graduation. This would be to help you gain a specialty within the field of neurodiagnostics.

Neurodiagnostic Techs Work Closely with Patients

As a neurodiagnostic technician, you would be responsible for recording the electrical activity of the brain, spinal cord and the entire nervous system with various different types of monitoring equipment. A neurodiagnostic test could last 20 minutes for a single nerve conduction study or eight hours for a sleep study. You would keep a keen eye open for significant abnormalities and report your findings to the attending physician. You could work with EEG, long term monitoring, intraoperative neuromonitoring, polysomnogram, and nerve conduction studies.

According to the American Society of Electroneurodiagnostic Technologists, graduates of neurodiagnostic technician schools could expect to earn $31,100. For a neurodiagnostic technologist, the median salary in 2006- the last year the ASET collected salary data- was $48,173. If you advance to a lab manager or even an independent contractor, you could earn more than $70,000 a year.
