RV Technician School

RV Technician Schools

RV Technician (Recreational Vehicle Service Technician) Schools prepare students to become successful motor home and travel trailer technicians and mechanics. Formal education, such as certificate or diploma programs from a technical school, is the best for entry-level positions. Upon completion, you may need to become certified in other areas of the field, depending on the job.

RV technician programs are a blend of automotive and bus and truck mechanics--RVs have many components similar to those automotive vehicles, and some components similar to bus and trucks. These programs provide up-to-date hands on training and skills needed to succeed in the field. With advance technology now being able to perform the overall inspection of RVs for RV technicians, knowledge of those computer systems are beneficial.

As part of the RV technician program, courses could include the following:
  • AC/DC Electricity
  • Generators
  • Body Repair
  • Physics

Career and Job Outlook

The primary duties for RV technicians are to identify the problems within the vehicle and determine a solution. In today's field, RV technicians have computers to help identify where the problems are. To determine where these problems are, RV technicians use a diagnostic approach--taking an overall inspection of the vehicle. After the problems are identified, other duties include repairing, adjusting or overhauling.

The job outlook for recreational vehicle technicians is expected to be slower than average, but there will still be plenty of opportunity as experienced RV technicians leave the field. In 2009, the mean annual wage for RV technicians was $33,380, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
